Prospective physical fitness status and development of cardiometabolic risk in children according to body fat and lifestyle behaviours: The IDEFICS study

Pediatric Obesity May 23, 2021

Santaliestra-Pasías AM, Moreno LA, Gracia-Marco L, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between muscular fitness (MF) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on cardiometabolic risk (CMR) in European children, both cross-sectional and longitudinally. In total, 289 children (49.5% males) from eight European countries, aged 6 to 9, with longitudinal information on blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, homoeostasis model assessment, BMI, data on fitness level, objectively measured physical activity, diet quality, and total screen time were involved. A high MF in early childhood and during childhood lowers the chances of developing CMR. The same is true for CRF improvement during childhood. Such findings emphasise the importance of improving fitness in children to avoid CMR.
