Prospective determination of the incidence and risk factors of new-onset uveitis in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: The Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children Emphasizing Outcomes Cohort

Arthritis Care & Research Nov 08, 2019

Lee JJY, Duffy CM, Guzman J, et al. - Data from the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children Emphasizing Outcomes inception cohort were utilized in order to predict the annual incidence of new-onset uveitis after juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) diagnosis and to recognize correlated risk factors. A total of 1,183 persons who recruited within 6 months of JIA diagnosis met inclusion criteria and of these, 87 developed uveitis following recruitment. In the first 5 years, the incidence of new-onset uveitis was 2.8% per year. During follow-up, the annual incidence declined but prevailed at 2.1% in the fifth year, however, overlapping in confidence intervals were seen. Uveitis was related to young age (< 7 years) at JIA diagnosis, positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test, oligoarthritis, polyarthritis RF negative, and female gender. In multivariable analysis, independent predictors of uveitis were only young age at JIA diagnosis and ANA positivity. Thus, for at least 5 years following JIA diagnosis, vigilant uveitis screening should proceed, and concentration for screening should be at a young age (< 7 years) at JIA diagnosis and a positive ANA test.
