Prospective cohort study of metabolic syndrome and endometrial cancer survival
Gynecologic Oncology Jul 01, 2020
Kokts-Porietis RL, McNeil J, Nelson G, et al. - Among endometrial cancer survivors, this inquiry was performed to ascertain the links between metabolic syndrome and its components with disease-free survival, overall survival, endometrial cancer-specific survival as well as recurrence. This study involved participants from a population-based case-control analysis who received a diagnosis of primary endometrial cancer between 2002 and 2006 in Alberta, Canada. The participants were followed until death or March 20, 2019. At diagnosis, metabolic syndrome was present in 325 of 540 endometrial cancer survivors, and a recurrence and/or death was reported in 132 during a median follow-up of 14.2 years. Worse overall survival was observed in correlation with being diagnosed with metabolic syndrome and having an elevated waist circumference (≥88 cm), as revealed in multivariable analyses. Worse disease-free survival was also observed in relation to increasing waist circumference (per 5 cm). Overall, findings revealed that endometrial cancer survivors experienced worse overall and disease-free survival in correlation with the presence of metabolic syndrome, specifically central adiposity.
