Prospective clinical trial comparing trapezial denervation with trapeziectomy for the surgical treatment of arthritis at the base of the thumb
Journal of Surgical Research Apr 08, 2019
Salibi A, et al. - Researchers compared functional outcomes, patient satisfaction, quality of life, and cost effectiveness following trapeziectomy and first carpometacarpal joint (first CMCJ) denervation for first carpometacarpal joint (first CMCJ) osteoarthritis. They studied a total of 45 of 55 recruited patients; 35 patients underwent denervation and 10 initially had trapeziectomy. Conversion to trapeziectomy was required for 9 patients within an average of 6 to 12 mo. Outcomes revealed no difference between the two treatments. No superiority of first CMCJ denervation to trapeziectomy seemed evident. However, more patients favored it due to the advantage of rapid rehabilitation, but at the expense of 30% reoperation rate.
