Prospective association of serum adipocyte fatty acid‐binding protein with heart failure hospitalization in diabetes

ESC Heart Failure Aug 11, 2021

Lee CH, Kan AKC, Lui DTW, et al. - An independent link of circulating adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (AFABP) level with incident heart failure (HF) hospitalization was found in type 2 diabetes, and circulating AFABP level potentially aids risk stratification for HF hospitalization prevention.

  • The Hong Kong West Diabetes Registry was used.

  • Total 3,322 Chinese participants (52.9% men; mean age 60.0 ± 12.6) without known history of cardiovascular diseases or hospitalization for HF were included.

  • A median follow-up of 8 years revealed HF hospitalization in 176 (5.3%) participants.

  • Significantly higher serum AFABP levels were present in participants who developed HF hospitalization vs those who did not.

  • A protective impact of high cumulative defined daily dose of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors on incident HF hospitalization was evident.
