Propofol vs inhalational agents to maintain general anaesthesia in ambulatory and in-patient surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Anesthesiology Nov 14, 2018
Schraag S, et al. - Researchers analyzed the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of peer-reviewed journals reporting patient-relevant outcomes and patient satisfaction between propofol vs inhalational agents when used to maintain general anaesthesia. They identified overall 6688 studies from PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane library between 01/01/1985 and 01/08/2016. They analyzed 229 RCTs with a total of 20,991 patients. Evidence revealed that, anaesthesia maintenance with propofol vs inhalational agents offered several advantages. With propofol vs inhalational agents, a lower post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) risk was observed. Also, propofol reduced pain score after extubation and time in the post-operative anaesthesia care unit (PACU). Propofol offered higher patient satisfaction. The primary results were supported in secondary analyses.
