Propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia is associated with better survival than desflurane anesthesia in colon cancer surgery
Anesthesiology Oct 20, 2018
Wu ZF, et al. - Since previous research has shown different effects of anesthetics on cancer cell growth, researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to assess the link between type of anesthetic (propofol or desflurane) and patient survival following elective colon cancer surgery. Patients who had elective colon cancer surgery between January 2005 and December 2014 and were administered propofol or desflurane were included in this study, and those who received combined propofol anesthesia with inhalation anesthesia or epidural anesthesia were excluded. Thereafter, survival curves were constructed for the participants from the date of surgery to death. Findings revealed better survival with propofol anesthesia for colon cancer surgery. This effect was seen regardless of tumor-node-metastasis stage.
