Prophylactic thyroidectomy in children with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2
British Journal of Surgery Apr 20, 2018
Prete FP, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers inspected the efficacy of thyroidectomy in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) syndrome between 1995 and 2013 in the UK. As per the findings, late genetic testing could preclude age-appropriate surgery, increasing the risk of operating when medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) already developed. It was deduced that early genetic testing and age-appropriate surgery could assist in avoiding unnecessary lymphadenectomy and improve outcomes.
