Prophylactic systemic antibiotics for anterior epistaxis treated with nasal packing in the ED
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Mar 28, 2019
Murano T, et al. - In this retrospective review of Emergency Department (ED) patients ≥ 18 years old with the discharge diagnosis of epistaxis, researchers performed a comparison between patients who were and were not prescribed prophylactic systemic antibiotics for anterior nasal packing in spontaneous epistaxis with respect to the infection rate. Further, they reviewed current management practices of antibiotic prescribing for these patients. Prophylactic systemic antibiotics were prescribed in over half of the patients, 57/106 (53.7%), who had anterior packing. For any of these patients, they identified no documented infections regardless of whether or not they were prescribed antibiotics. These findings support previous findings suggesting no necessity for prophylactic antibiotic use for nasal packing in spontaneous epistaxis patients.
