Prophylactic salpingectomy for prevention of ovarian cancer at the time of elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy
British Journal of Surgery Mar 12, 2020
Tomasch G, Lemmerer M, Oswald S, et al. - In view of the consideration that the risk of developing high-grade serous ovarian cancer may reduce with removing fallopian tubes (salpingectomy), researchers here examined the acceptance for prophylactic salpingectomy with the intention of reducing the risk of developing ovarian cancer and the possibility for its accomplishment at the time of elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. One hundred and five women (aged at least 45 years) who were scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were counseled and offered prophylactic bilateral salpingectomy at the time of cholecystectomy.
The rate of acceptance of salpingectomy was about 60%. In 98 of 105 laparoscopic cholecystectomies (93·3%), salpingectomy was done and in seven (6·7%), it was not accomplished because of poor visibility or adhesions. They reported median additional operating time of 13 (range 4–45) min. No complications attributable to salpingectomy was identified. Outcomes suggest that during elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, prophylactic salpingectomy can be done.
