Prophylactic perioperative dexamethasone decreases the incidence of post-operative c5 palsies following a posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion
The Spine Journal Jun 02, 2018
Dombrowski ME, et al. - Authors evaluated the safety and effectiveness of prophylactic perioperative dexamethasone in decreasing the rate of postoperative C5 palsy. As per data, for decreasing the incidence of C5 palsies in patients who undergo multilevel posterior laminectomy and fusion for myeloradiculopathy or myelopathy, perioperative prophylactic dexamethasone therapy was a safe and effective way. The only risk factor that was significantly associated with the development of C5 palsy was age. In patients receiving prophylactic dexamethasone, infection, seroma, and wound complication rates were 2.8%, 2.17%, respectively.
