Propensity matched analysis comparing conscious sedation vs general anesthesia in transcatheter aortic valve implantation
The American Journal of Cardiology May 09, 2019
Mosleh W, et al. - Researchers compared general anesthesia (GA) to conscious sedation (CS) in terms of safety, efficacy, efficiency, and direct cost outcomes in patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). They retrospectively screened records for all adult patients undergoing transfemoral TAVI between February 2012 and September 2018 at their center. They classified the participants based on anesthesia treatment (GA or CS). They also applied propensity matching. Less bleeding and vascular events, lower procedural radiation exposure, decreased length of hospitalization and intensive care unit stay, and lower direct costs were reported in relation to TAVI with CS vs TAVI with GA. Procedural efficacy or safety was not compromised to generate these outcomes.
