Cai C, Runte J, Ostrer I, et al. - In this systematic review of economic analyses, researchers determined the projected cost impact of a single-payer approach. They performed a literature search from June 1 through December 31, 2018, without a start date restriction for included studies, using PubMed, Google, and Google Scholar. They also searched preexisting lists for formal economic studies of the projected costs of single-payer plans for the United States or for individual states. The researchers found a high degree of analytic consensus for the fiscal feasibility of a single-payer approach in the United States. They showed that actual costs will depend on plan features and implementation. They suggested that future studies should refine estimates of the impact of coverage expansion on utilization, investigate provider administrative costs in varied existing single-payer systems, evaluate implementation options, and assess US-based single-payer programs, as available.
