Progressive tibial bearing sagittal plane conformity in cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Sep 02, 2020

Meding JB, Meding LK, Meneghini RM, et al. - This study was conducted to assume that when the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is found deficient at total knee arthroplasty (TKA), applying an anterior-stabilized (AS) tibial insert would provide similar function and survivorship when compared to applying a more traditional cruciate-retaining (CR) bearing when the is balanced. Researchers conducted a sum of 1,731 TKAs applying the same TKA design. The Knee Society scoring system was applied to conduct follow-up. They applied Kaplan-Meier survivorship with failure defined as aseptic loosening. The data suggested that applying an AS insert provided similar function and 5-year survivorship as compared to using a CR insert implanted and lipped CR insert tibial insert when the PCL was balanced. When the PCL is completely released or found deficient at operation, using an ultra congruent AS dished tibial component seems to be a reasonable option.
