Progression retinal ganglion cell loss in multiple sclerosis is associated with new lesions in the optic radiations
European Journal of Neurology Aug 17, 2017
Klistorner A, et al. – The authors examine the relationship between temporal RNFL (tRNFL) thinning and disease activity in the brain determined by T2 lesions on MRI. They supported the notion that in progressive RNFL loss, retrograde transneuronal degeneration caused by optic radiation lesions could play a role. Furthermore, the outcomes of the study also demonstrated that the disease–related neurodegenerative changes in the retina start much earlier than the clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS).
