Progranulin as a novel biomarker in diagnosis of early-onset neonatal sepsis
Cytokine Jan 31, 2020
Rao L, Song Z, Yu X, et al. - In this study including 121 infants with gestational age of > 34 weeks admitted with suspected early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS), researchers assessed the diagnostic significance of progranulin (PGRN) in EOS and contrasted it with other commonly used biomarkers, such as procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP), in terms of effectiveness. They noted significantly higher serum PGRN level in the infected group vs uninfected group. For PGRN, for age adjusted PCT, and for CRP, the ROC area under the curve was 0.786, 0.699, and 0.673, respectively. The diagnostic sensitivity of PGRN was 94.34% and negative predictive value was 91.7%, at a cut-off value of 37.89 ng/ml. Experts concluded that PGRN may serve as a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of EOS, and improved diagnosis of sepsis could be afforded by the combined use of PGRN and PCT.
