Programmatic human papillomavirus testing in cervical cancer prevention in the Jujuy Demonstration Project in Argentina: A population-based, before-and-after retrospective cohort study
The Lancet Global Health May 21, 2019
Arrossi S, et al. - For the detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) of grade 2 or worse (CIN2+), researchers assessed the effectiveness of programmatic human papillomavirus (HPV) testing vs cytology-based screening. A total number of 29,631 females went through the cytology-based screening and 236 out of them were diagnosed with CIN2+. HPV testing was conducted in 49,565 women, of which 693 were detected with CIN2+ following the first round of screening. The diagnosis of CIN2+ lesions via HPV testing in middle-income settings was enhanced. Improvements in the programmatic indicators were also allowed through HPV testings. Cervical cancer burden can effectively be reduced if HPV testings were introduced at a larger scale.
