Prognostic value of vasodilator stress cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: A multicenter study with 48,000 patient-years of follow-up

JAMA Cardiology Mar 27, 2019

Heitner JF, et al. - Via analyzing real-world evidence, researchers investigated the ability of stress cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) in predicting patient mortality in this multicenter study. Participants included patients who were being evaluated clinically for myocardial ischemia. At 7 different hospitals, clinical vasodilator stress CMR was performed on patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). With the help of an automated process, data were gathered from the finalized clinical reports, as well as data were deidentified and aggregated and mortality was evaluated applying the US Social Security Death Index. Mortality prediction in 2 different risk models was improved as well as risk reclassification was improved with the addition of stress CMR, as revealed in the multivariable analysis. In a large, distinct population of patients with known or suspected CAD, an association was found between clinical vasodilator stress CMR and patient mortality. This link was also evident in multiple subpopulations defined by history of CAD and left ventricular ejection fraction.
