Prognostic value of lower bone mineral density in predicting adverse cardiovascular disease in Asian women

Heart May 12, 2021

Park J, Yoon YE, Kim KM, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 12,681 females aged 50–80 years (mean, 63.0±7.8 years) who had dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, it was inquired if the assessment of bone mineral density (BMD) offers independent as well as incremental prognostic worth for predicting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). An independent link of lower BMD, at the lumbar spine, femur neck and total hip, with a higher risk for ASCVD events was identified. Also, there was an independent link between a clinical diagnosis of osteoporosis and higher risk for ASCVD events. Findings demonstrate an independent as well as incremental prognostic value is offered by BMD evaluation for ASCVD in women and therefore, BMD assessment may confer improved risk stratification in females.
