Prognostic value of abdominal aortic calcification: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational studies
Journal of the American Heart Association Jan 17, 2021
Leow K, Szulc P, Schousboe JT, et al. - Researchers investigated the prognostic worth of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) seen on noninvasive imaging modalities. Prospective studies describing AAC and incident cardiovascular events or all‐cause death were identified from electronic databases (MEDLINE and Embase). They found higher risk of cardiovascular events, fatal cardiovascular events, and all‐cause mortality was present in people with any or more advanced AAC. A higher risk of cardiovascular events, fatal cardiovascular events, and all‐cause mortality was also found in patients with chronic kidney disease with any or more advanced AAC. Overall, experts identified a substantially greater risk of future cardiovascular events and poorer prognosis in higher‐risk groups, such as the elderly and those with chronic kidney disease with AAC. Clinicians may better understand as well as manage patients' cardiovascular risk if they are provided with information on AAC.
