Prognostic significance of tumor budding, tumor-stroma ratio, cell nests size, and stroma type in laryngeal and pharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas

Head & Neck May 30, 2019

Karpathiou G, et al. - Researchers explored the prognostic and predictive role of tumor stroma factors in a large series of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). They retrospectively studied 266 patients with laryngeal and pharyngeal SCC and identified adverse prognostic factors comprising stroma-rich tumors, tumor budding, smaller cell nests size (CNS) at core and front area, and fibroblastic stroma type. Good response to induction chemotherapy was observed in correlation to stroma-poor tumors and to larger CNS.
