Prognostic significance of pain in parotid gland malignancy
The Laryngoscope Jun 17, 2021
Colevas S, Thompson J, Glazer T, et al. - By performing this retrospective chart review, researchers investigated the significance of pain as a predictor of disease severity in parotid gland cancer. They analyzed patients managed for primary parotid gland malignancy at their institution between 1991 and 2020. There were 154 patients in total, of which 69 were in the low stage group and 80 patients in the high stage group. Presentation with pain was evident in 37 high stage patients. Pain on presentation seemed to represent a poor prognostic factor for patients suffering from parotid gland cancer. There was an independent link of pain with elevated risk of recurrence and reduced disease-free survival time, for cases with demonstrated high stage disease.
