Prognostic significance of acute kidney injury following emergency laparotomy: A prospective observational cohort study
World Journal of Surgery Oct 11, 2018
Dewi F, et al. - Researchers studied consecutive 239 patients of median age 68 years, undergoing emergency laparotomy (EL) in a UK tertiary hospital, to determine acute kidney injury (AKI) incidence following EL and to assess patients’ risk profile and consequent mortality. Findings suggest that following EL, peri-operative AKI occurs commonly and is associated with a more than sixfold significant greater mortality. AKI was observed in correlation with chronic kidney disease, age, serum lactate, white cell count, pre-EL systolic blood pressure and tachycardia. They recommend performing pre-operative risk profile assessment and prompt protocol-driven intervention for minimizing AKI incidence and EL mortality.
