Prognostic indicators in stage IV surgically treated gastric cancer patients: A retrospective multi-institutional study
Digestive Surgery Jul 01, 2018
Biondi A, et al. - The short- and long-term outcomes of stage IV surgically treated gastric cancer patients were investigated via a retrospective review assessing 122 stage IV gastric cancer patients undergoing elective surgery for incurable gastric carcinoma. As per outcomes, survival could be enhanced via surgery combined with systemic chemotherapy in certain patients with stage IV gastric cancer. Site of metastases, extended lymph node dissection, absence of residual disease after surgery, and administration of adjuvant chemotherapy all contribute to improved survival, as does being less than 60 years of age. Residual disease and adjuvant chemotherapy were noted to have independent prognostic significance.
