Prognostic indicators in base of tongue adenocarcinoma: A population-based analysis
ENT Journal Oct 29, 2019
Kraimer K, Ganti A, Plitt MA, et al. - Utilizing a population-based database, researchers described the epidemiology of base of tongue adenocarcinoma and identified prognostic factors that can affect survival. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, a retrospective cohort study was conducted. Based on inclusion criteria, a total of 176 cases were eligible. Data reported that the 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were 49% and 66%, respectively. According to multivariate analysis, surgical management was correlated with improved OS and DSS, whereas higher tumor grade was related to worse OS and DSS. There was no significant association with OS or DSS for the administration of chemotherapy or radiation. This research is the largest to date to examine the adenocarcinoma tongue base as its own entity. Surgery remains the cornerstone of therapy, and lower tumor grade in these patients is associated with enhanced survival. Radiation or chemotherapy administration has not been associated with enhanced survival.
