Prognostic impact of trisomy 21 in follicular lymphoma
British Journal of Haematology Nov 16, 2018
Mitsui T, et al. - Researchers intended to identify the chromosomal abnormalities related to the prognosis in follicular lymphoma (FL). For this purpose, they assessed the pattern of chromosomal abnormalities in FL, and focused on the correlations between the cytogenetic features and clinical outcome. For 201 FL patients admitted to the hospitals between 2001 and 2013, cytogenetic analysis was performed using standard methods of Giemsa-banding at diagnosis. According to findings, a remarkably shorter progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) was seen in patients with trisomy 21 vs those without trisomy 21; additionally, a significantly shorter OS was seen in patients with trisomy 21 in the rituximab-treated cohort. Overall, the presence of trisomy 21 was identified as an independent risk factor in FL. With regard to the expected survival of FL patients, useful information could be obtained via chromosomal analysis of FL patients at diagnosis.
