Prognostic impact of repeat sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence
British Journal of Surgery Mar 31, 2019
Poodt IGM, et al. - Investigators evaluated 515 candidates to assess the prognostic ability of repeat sentinel lymph node biopsy (rSLNB) and other patient and tumor features on distant recurrence-free survival. They found 230 cases with a tumor-negative rSLNB and 46 with a tumor-positive rSLNB. The rSLNB procedure was noted as unsuccessful in 239 patients. Ultimately, a recurrence was seen in 115 patients after a median 5.1 years of follow up. They found an independent correlation of triple-negative ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) and lack of adjuvant chemotherapy following IBTR with poor distant recurrence-free survival. They reported that, for distant recurrence-free survival, the outcome of rSLNB did not have prognostic significance.
