Prognostic factors of disease-free and overall survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing partial hepatectomy in curative intent
Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery Dec 01, 2018
Lurje G, et al. - Researchers analyzed 111 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-patients who underwent liver resection in curative intent, between 2010 and 2016, to determine the prognostic markers for disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS). In addition, the effects of HCC-recurrence were assessed in a subgroup of patients. DFS was noted to be independently associated with Milan criteria, macrovascular invasion and UICC (Union for international cancer control) tumor stage while OS was noted to be independently associated with macrovascular invasion and model of end stage liver disease (MELD) score. Hence, the poor oncological outcome was not evident in correlation with tumor recurrence alone. Repeat liver resections and local-ablative procedures may aid improving OS in HCC.
