Prognostic factors in recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
Head & Neck May 30, 2019
Mirabile A, et al. - Given that Argiris et al derived a two-group prognostic classification for recurrent and metastatic head and neck carcinoma using prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), weight loss, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, tumor primary site, tumor differentiation, prior radiotherapy, identified in clinical trials. In this present analysis, researchers appraised Argiris's classification in “field-practice” patients. They analyzed 327 cases in the main analysis; excluded 31 patients with oropharyngeal carcinoma p16-positive and/or human papilloma virus-positive in the secondary analysis. In patients with 0-2 and ≥3 adverse features had a significantly different OS and statistically different PFS, confirming the Argiris's model in a “field-practice” population. Site of relapse and disease-free interval were noted to be significant predictors of OS and PFS in multivariable analysis investigating additional prognostic features.
