Prognostic factors for the sequelae and severity of Guillain-Barre Syndrome in children
Muscle & Nerve Sep 26, 2019
Estrade S, Guiomard C, Fabry V, et al. - Given that Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory polyradiculoneuritis, researchers conducted this multicentre retrospective study to characterize the clinical features and the long-term sequelae of GBS in a French paediatric population. Participants in the study were 110 children presented with walking difficulties, muscle weakness and cranial nerve impairment. According to results, electrodiagnostic testing showed 70% acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) and 16% acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN). Despite the similarity between AIDP and AMAN, the axonal form is linked to a worse result. There was a correlation between the need for intubation and peripheral facial paralysis and dysautonomia.
