Prognostic factors for response to treatment by corticosteroid injection or surgery in carpal tunnel syndrome (PaLMS study): A prospective multi-centre cohort study
Muscle & Nerve Mar 06, 2019
Jerosch-Herold C, et al. - In this prospective multi-centre cohort study, researchers intended to identify prognostic factors for corticosteroid injection or surgery in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) treatment response. For this investigation, they prospectively collected data on patient-reported symptoms, physical and psychological functioning, comorbidity and quality of life at baseline and 6 months for up to 2 years. Multivariable modelling has been identified as significant predictors of better outcome from surgery, regardless of symptom severity at the outset, higher health utility, fewer comorbidities and lower anxiety. Significant predictors of better outcome were in patients treated with steroid injection, regardless of symptom severity at the outset, shorter symptom duration and without prior injection. Findings suggested that these multivariable outcome models can inform shared decision-making on CTS treatment.
