Prognostic factors for adolescent knee pain: An individual participant data meta-analysis of 1,281 patients
Pain May 31, 2021
Holden S, Kasza J, Winters M, et al. - In view of the propensity of adolescent knee pain for chronicity, impacting physical activity and health into adulthood, researchers here in sought to determine prognostic factors in adolescents with knee pain employing individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis. IPD was included from prospective studies of adolescents (age 10-19 years) with nontraumatic knee pain (13 studies and 1516 adolescents with 1,281 unique participants). Overall adolescent knee pain is linked with clinically relevant long-term pain and functional deficits. Knee pain was reported in 51% after 12-months. They observed an association of lower baseline pain frequency with lower pain intensity at 12 months. Other factors most strongly linked with 1-year pain prognosis included lower quality of life, female gender, and bilateral pain. Association of similar factors with function was observed.
