Prognostic factors associated with recovery in children with Bell’s palsy

Journal of Child Neurology Aug 16, 2019

Karatoprak E, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers determined the prognosis of children with Bell’s palsy (n = 102; mean age was 10.37 ± 4.2 years) and investigated the prognostic factors influencing early recovery. For this investigation, they reviewed the medical records of children with a diagnosis of Bell’s palsy. Demographic and clinical characteristics including age, gender, House-Brackmann Facial Nerve Grading System House-Brackmann Grading Scale grade at admission and follow-up, as well as the dosage and onset of steroid treatment were evaluated. Laboratory findings like red blood cell distribution width and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio have been noted. Investigators found that Bell's palsy prognosis in children was very nice. House-Brackmann Facial Nerve Grading System grade 2 or 3 on the 10th day and receiving steroid treatment within the first 24 hours were the prognostic factors affecting early recovery. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood cell distribution width have not been identified as predictive factors for early recovery.
