Prognostic differences in 8th edition TNM staging of esophagogastric adenocarcinoma after neoadjuvant treatment
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jul 13, 2018
Sisic L, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain the prognostic differences between pTN- and ypTN-categories and the prognostic accuracy of the 8th edition UICC-pTNM- and AJCC-ypTNM-staging-system for esophageal and gastric adenocarcinoma via retrospectively analyzing data from 740 patients with esophagogastric adenocarcinoma, who had curative surgery (344 after neoadjuvant treatment [NT]). As per findings, ypTN-categories seemed to have limited prognostic value. The current UICC/AJCC-staging-system can predict survival in esophageal adenocarcinoma after NT, but it needs reevaluation in gastric cancer patients and modification if needed. For patients after NT, a novel simplified staging system seemed to be more feasible.
