Prognostic accuracy of the Hamilton Early Warning Score (HEWS) and the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) among hospitalized patients assessed by a rapid response team
Critical Care Feb 28, 2019
Fernando SM, et al. - By retrospectively evaluating prospectively collected data (2012-2016) from consecutive rapid response team (RRT) patients from two hospitals, researchers assessed the prognostic precision of the Hamilton Early Warning Score (HEWS) and the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) for prediction of in-hospital mortality following RRT activation; they also secondarily assessed a subgroup of patients with suspected infection. Data reported that the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was 0.76 for HEWS and 0.72 for NEWS2. Among patients with suspected infections, AUROC was 0.79 for HEWS and 0.75 for NEWS2. In patients with RRT, HEWS has similar clinical accuracy vs NEWS2 in the predicting mortality in hospitals.
