Prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma with perineural invasion: A comparative study of classification types
Clinical Otolaryngology Nov 12, 2019
Park J, Megow A, Swalling A, et al. - In this retrospective review of medical records and histological analysis of 116 individuals with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), researchers sought to examine the histological location and extent of perineural invasion (PNI) as prognostic factors. From January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2015, they included patients diagnosed with OSCC who had primary surgical treatment with curative intent at these two centres. According to findings, the presence of PNI alone as a binary factor did not affect the clinical outcomes significantly. Findings suggested an association of the presence of multi-focal and extra-tumoral PNI in OSCC with poor clinical results. Even with adjuvant therapy, patients with multi-focal PNI were linked to worse disease-free survival.
