Prognosis of nonoperative treatment in elderly patients with a hip fracture: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Injury Aug 26, 2020
Loggers SAI, van Lieshout EMM, Joosse P, et al. - Via performing a systematic review, researchers sought to report on the prognosis of nonoperative management in frail elderly patients with a hip fracture in terms of mortality, complications, mobility, and quality of life (QoL). From PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central, they screened a total of 4,318 studies. Of these, they included 18 studies meeting the eligibility criteria; with low to moderate quality. Outcomes revealed poor prognosis in correlation with nonoperative management of frail elderly patients with a hip fracture. Heterogenous study cohorts and limited outcomes were inscribed. In current literature, there was a lack of evidence of the actual prognosis of nonoperative management of frail elderly patient with a hip fracture and a limited life expectancy. Results of this review can aid in decision making and in improving expectation management.
