Prognosis for intracerebral hemorrhage during ongoing oral anticoagulant treatment
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Jan 23, 2019
Apostolaki-Hansson T, et al. - Using data from the Swedish Stroke Register (Riksstroke) and the Swedish Causes of Death Register between 2012 and 2016, researchers compared 90-day survival and functional outcome following non-Vitamin K Antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC)-intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) with vitamin-K antagonists (VKA)-ICH. The estimated functional outcome was compared between VKA and NOAC-associated ICH using the Chi-squared test at 90 days based on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Study participants included 2,483 patients (300 with NOAC-ICH and 2,183 with VKA-ICH). No significant difference in mortality and functional outcome at 90 days was found between NOAC-ICH vs VKA-ICH in this large study on anticoagulant-associated ICH. Increased age and reduced level of consciousness were factors predicting death.
