Prognosis, complications and treatment response in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis patients: A single-center experience
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Jul 11, 2019
Barut K, et al. - Among patients (n=168) diagnosed with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis-a distinctive subtype of juvenile idiopathic arthritis characterized by systemic features and poor outcome-researchers determined demographic and clinical characteristics, long-term treatment response and disease complications. The study sample comprised 51.8% female and 48.2% male, with monocyclic, polycyclic and persistent clinical course seen in 31.5%, 13.7%, and 54.8% of overall participants. They found that diverse clinical presentation and likely severe complications characterized the disease. The major mortality factor was macrophage activation syndrome complicated with multiorgan insufficiency. The mainstay of the initial therapy was corticosteroids. Timely introduction of biological drugs was recommended in patients resistant to classic therapy.
