Procalcitonin levels in candidemia vs bacteremia: A systematic review
Critical Care Jun 05, 2019
Cortegiani A, et al. - Via this systematic review, researchers analyzed current evidence regarding the ability of procalcitonin (PCT) values for discriminating candidemia from bacteremia. They searched PubMed and EMBASE and identified studies assessing the diagnostic performance of serum PCT levels in intensive care unit (ICU) or non-ICU adult patients with candidemia vs bacteremia. With 45,079 patients and 785 cases of candidemia, 16 studies were analyzed. As limited supporting evidence was found, experts recommended against the use of PCT as a standalone tool for the differential diagnosis between candidemia and bacteremia. Taken together with other biomarkers of infection (eg, beta-d-glucan), PCT may offer a better diagnostic performance regarding candidemia but more data is required.
