Prior prescription opioid use and its influence on opioid requirements after orthopedic trauma

Journal of Surgical Research Apr 08, 2019

Chaudhary MA, et al. - Researchers examined how prior opioid use influence prescription opioid requirements after orthopedic trauma. Performing a retrospective review of TRICARE claims (2006-2014), the records of 11,752 patients treated for orthopedic injuries were evaluated. Outcomes revealed lower likelihoods of opioid discontinuation in correlation with prior opioid exposure among nonsustained users and sustained use at the time of injury. Along with socioeconomic status, behavioral health disorders, and severity of injury, prior opioid use was identified strongly predicting continued use following treatment. Likelihood of sustained opioid use after injury may reduce via undertaking appropriate discharge planning and early engagement of ancillary services in individuals with one or more of these risk factors.
