Prior heart failure hospitalization and outcomes in patients with heart failure with preserved and reduced ejection fraction
American Journal of Medicine Jul 25, 2019
Malik A, et al. – In a sample of 1,848 matched patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and 3,688 matched patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), researchers determined the correlation between prior heart failure hospitalization and outcomes in spatients with HFpEF and HFrEF. The hazard ratios (HRs) were 1.35, 1.34, and 1.90, respectively, for all-cause mortality, all-cause readmission, and heart failure readmission in matched patients with HFpEF. Respective HRs in matched patients with HFrEF were 1.17, 1.32, and 1.48. Hence, a prior heart failure hospitalization had a correlation with greater risks of mortality and readmission in both HFpEF and HFrEF. The relative risks of death and heart failure readmission seemed to be greater in HFpEF vs in HFrEF.
