Primary tumor resection in stage IV breast cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Aug 16, 2018
Xiao W, et al. - Via a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers investigated how primary tumor resection (PTR) impacts overall survival (OS) in stage IV breast cancer. They analyzed data on 714 patients from three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 67,272 patients from 30 observational studies. Findings revealed that PTR significantly improved OS. In addition, PTR was correlated with better distant progression-free survival, but did not have an impact on progression-free survival. As per subgroup analysis, PTR seemed valuable for patients who had only one metastatic site, bone-only metastasis, with negative margin. They recommend PTR in selected patients rather than routinely in stage IV breast cancer.
