Primary treatment patterns and survival of cervical cancer in Sweden: A population-based Swedish Gynecologic Cancer Group Study
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 12, 2019
Bjurberg M, Holmberg E, Borgfeldt C, et al. - In this population-based study, researchers analyzed primary treatment patterns and survival in patients included in the Swedish Quality Registry for Gynecologic Cancer diagnosed 2011–2015, given a little improvement in survival in cervical cancer has been reported over the last decades. Participants were observed over a median duration of 4.6 years. Five-year relative survival (RS) was the main outcome. There were 2,141 patients in total; 97% of the 2212 patients in the total cohort and the 5-year age-standardised RS was 71% and 70%, respectively. Findings revealed the adherence of primary treatment of cervical cancer in Sweden to evidence-based standard of care. Lower than expected survival rates were observed for stages III-IVA in this real-world setting. For early stages of cervical cancer managed with surgery, excellent survival was reported. Optimizing treatment for stages III-IVA, and avoiding integrating surgery and radiotherapy were suggested as areas of improvement.
