Primary total knee arthroplasty performed using high-viscosity cement is associated with higher odds of revision for aseptic loosening
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 24, 2019
Buller LT, et al. - Researchers examined if using high viscosity cement (HVC) during primary TKA is associated with higher odds revision for aseptic loosening (AL). In this retrospective analysis, they included data of 10,014 patients; based on cement type, they formed two groups, HVC and low viscosity cement (LVC). The HVC cohort (91/4790) vs the LVC cohort (48/5224) had significantly higher rates of revision for AL. As per logistic regression, there was an independent association of HVC with higher odds of revision for AL. Higher odds of revision for aseptic loosening were also evident in correlation with younger age. The odds of undergoing revision for AL were also influenced by the implant manufacturer, implant design, and cement brand.
