Primary malignant ovarian carcinoid; management and outcomes
Gynecologic Oncology Jan 26, 2020
Nasioudis D, et al. - Researchers explored the clinicopathological features as well as the survival of patients with malignant ovarian carcinoid tumor (OC), using the National Cancer Database. They identified patients (N = 588; median age 51.5 years) who received a diagnosis of OC between 2004 and 2015 and did not have a personal history of a tumor at another site. For patients who were followed-up for ≥ 1 month, overall survival was evaluated. Among participants, most of the patients were White (71.6%), were suffering from unilateral tumors (94.2%) with a median size of 3.8 cm that were confined to the ovary (88%). Findings revealed OCs as typically small, unilateral tumors that are confined to the ovary originating in perimenopausal patients. Patients with early stage disease experienced excellent survival outcomes. Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy seemed to be curative.
