Primary laparoscopic endorectal pull-through procedure with or without a postoperative rectal tube for Hirschsprung disease: A multicenter perspective study
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Apr 01, 2020
Zhang X, et al. - In this large multicenter series study, researchers analyzed the impact of preserving a postoperative rectal tube on preventing Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) following primary laparoscopic endorectal pull-through procedure. A total of 383 consecutive individuals with rectosigmoid segment HD were randomly divided into group A (n = 190) and group B (n = 193) between 2014 and 2017. All of them had primary laparoscopic pull-through procedure, with the same postoperative treatment protocols except for group A with a rectal tube after surgery for 5 days, whereas group B did not have it. Outcomes within 1 month after surgery showed a lower incidence of abdominal distention and postoperative HAEC in group A vs group B. Primary laparoscopic endorectal pull-through procedure with a postoperative rectal tube will minimize the early postoperative occurrence of abdominal distension and HAEC, and the long-term risk of HAEC recurrence, and is useful for postoperative management.
