Primary hyperparathyroidism in pregnancy: Maternofetal outcomes at a quaternary referral obstetric hospital, 2000 through 2015
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Jan 24, 2019
Rigg J, et al. - In this retrospective chart review, researchers compared maternofetal outcomes of medically and surgically treated pregnant patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Study participants included women with PHPT in pregnancy treated between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2015. They observed that most medically treated patients either had a corrected serum calcium concentration of < 2.85 mmol/L early in pregnancy or were diagnosed with PHPT in trimester 3. Investigators reported that all surgically treated patients delivered their babies at term, and there were no parathyroid surgery complications. The rates of preeclampsia and preterm delivery in medically treated patients were higher vs surgically treated patients.
