Jergesen H, et al. - Authors ascertained the relationship between selected risk factors and short-term complications patients who underwent hip and knee arthroplasty in safety net hospital settings, including a large subgroup with treated substance abuse. Findings suggested an association of specific risk factors with short-term complications in safety net arthroplasty patients. Compared to others, substance abuse patients had more complications, despite having completed a preoperative sobriety pathway. Nonetheless, for adverse surgical outcomes, substance abuse alone was not an independent risk factor. With adverse outcomes, HCV and HIV infection that were commonly detected in patients.
