Primary baerveldt vs trabeculectomy study after 5 years of follow-up
Acta Ophthalmologica Nov 22, 2019
Islamaj E, et al. - Among 119 glaucoma patients without previous ocular surgery, researchers contrasted Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) surgery and trabeculectomy (TE). One eye was randomized to either a BGI or TE for each patient. An intraocular pressure (IOP) of 12.7 ± 3.9 mmHg (mean ± SD) in the TE group and 12.9 ± 3.9 mmHg in the BGI group were achieved after 5 years. According to this randomized prospective study, the final IOP and failure rate were comparable after TE and BGI surgery in the long term. Nevertheless, after BGI surgery, the need for additional medication is greater than after TE. It is also necessary to take into account the increased risk of developing diplopia after BGI surgery.
